Bearly Legal

January 31st, 2010 by Amanda

Photographer Rosanna Anson did a photo series involving a girl and a bear. I’m not sure whether to think this is cute and sweet, a girls fantasy of being friends with a bear, or if it’s more of a Furry type of thing….either way her clothes are really cute.

Leave us a comment and let us know what your fantasies in-real-life are, even if it’s holding hands with a bear in a forest. We want to know!! (Nothing dirty please.)

Hobbit House

January 25th, 2010 by Amanda

You are looking at pictures of a real life hobbit house. It was built in Wales by Simon Dale, his family, and friends and took only 4 months. It was also built from natural materials with maximum regard for the environment which gives them “a unique opportunity to live close to nature.” I think my favorite thing about this house, besides the fact that it’s awesome and would do J.R.R. Tolkien proud, is that it really is dug into a hillside, making this a truly authentic house suitable for The Shire.

And there’s a slideshow!

You can view all of the construction here.

Girl Peels Off Her Cyborg Parts

January 21st, 2010 by Sydney

This is the second test shoot I’ve done for a video that I’m working on.  This piece is my way of dealing with a childhood fantasy, the desire to be/become a robot/cyborg, and the anxiety one feels as they come to realize that their fantasies can never be real.  In the video, I’m literally breaking-down/peeling away/deconstructing the fantasy in a way that’s physically painful/stressful to mirror the emotional pain and stress.

As you can see, the video cuts off.  Camera problems, lighting problems, and some other problems mean I have to do it again.  I guess that’s why they say the third time is a charm… They say that right? Please, God, tell me that’s what they say.  This shit hurts!

Ultimate Utopia XXIII, an RPG parody

January 19th, 2010 by Senna

So friend of Fantasy IRL Alex Paxton from AXPX showed me an interesting spoof video the other day. As part of the Fantasy IRL project exhibition, I am making a video that will take on the format and model of an old-school turn based RPG. Although mine will not be as goofy, it’s worth watching for the epic, nearly ten-minute long boss battle. Ha. Enjoy.

Kate Bush or alien in disguise?

December 10th, 2009 by Senna

Kate Bush is one of my favorite outlandish musicians.  Almost as much as Bjork. Wouldn’t it be awesome if she was actually an alien from a theatrical, campy planet? Maybe she’s from the same galaxy as Lady Gaga…FantasyIRL to form intergalactic alliance of aliens turned pop stars!

(directed by Chris Cunningham, who I very much enjoy)

Robots & Starships: Unique Playgrounds From The 70’s

October 10th, 2009 by Sydney

I actually never really liked going to playgrounds when I was little.  Bad things would always happen to me at them.  One time I stepped on a piece of glass.  Another time someone tried to steal me.  And another time I broke my leg.  And this other time I sprained my tailbone.  And another time I got the biggest splinter of my life.  It was like… two inches wide.  But I bet if playgrounds were as cool as these ones from the 70’s, I probably would have been more motivated to climb the shit out of those jungle gyms.  But they weren’t.  So I wasn’t.

Sand Sculptures That Will Blow Your Mind

September 23rd, 2009 by Amanda

These are the most amazing sand castles I’ve ever seen, well I guess they’re not really sand “castles”, well whatever they are, they are out of this world. Unfortunately, I have no idea where they are.

“African elephants, the Egyptian sphinx, Batman, Spiderman, the incredible Hulk and also other super heroes, movie and TV show characters are just some of many giant sculptures transforming a seaside resort. The most amazing part about this is that the sculptures are made entirely out of sand.” No Labyrinth though. Has anybody ever made a labyrinth out of sand? Now that I’d like to see.

New WoW Patch

September 4th, 2009 by Senna

Soooooo…

As some of you may know, the newest World of Warcraft patch has given Druids the rightful choice of altering the appearance of their animal forms.  Living as a druid in the realm of Akama, I have become a white bear and panther with purple markings, just like my night elf form.  It is truly refreshing to see all the aesthetic changes that have been made, as well as the new BG’s and what not.  Wintergrasp here I come!

Do You Want To Date My Avatar?

August 31st, 2009 by Amanda

This is pretty ridiculous and I feel requires little to no explanation.

Unfortunately, this hits very close to home with me. I was harassed quite a bit from people wanting to do naughty things to my Night Elf when I played World of Warcraft. Ah sweet memories…

Thanks Cosplay in America for this gem.

Living Root Bridges

August 9th, 2009 by Amanda

Atlas Obscura says:

“In the depths of northeastern India, in one of the wettest places on earth, bridges aren’t built – they’re grown. The Ficus elastica produces a series of secondary roots from higher up its trunk and can comfortably perch atop huge boulders along the riverbanks, or even in the middle of the rivers themselves.

The root bridges, some of which are over a hundred feet long, take ten to fifteen years to become fully functional, but they’re extraordinarily strong – strong enough that some of them can support the weight of fifty or more people at a time.

These bridges were re-discovered by Denis P. Rayen of the Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort. Due to his efforts to promote interest in the bridges, the local population has been alerted to their potential worth and has kept them from being destroyed in favor of steel ones. What’s more, a new root bridge is currently being grown and should be ready for use within a decade.”

Top Five Real Fantasy/Science Fiction Cities

July 29th, 2009 by Amanda

City of Life

Shared Worlds says:

“At Shared Worlds students create fantasy and science fiction worlds to fuel their writing, art, and game development. But even the strangest made-up place can have some real-world spark. Our own planet is often surreal, alien, and beautifully strange–and cities tend to focus our fascination with these qualities. Sometimes the exoticness comes from finding the unexpected where we live, and sometimes it comes from visiting a place that’s foreign to us. Everyone also has a different idea of what “fantasy” or “science fiction” looks like in real places.

So we decided to ask five top SF-fantasy authors – Elizabeth Hand, Nalo Hopkinson, Ursula K. LeGuin, China Miéville, and Michael Moorcock –the following question: “What’s your pick for the top real-life fantasy or science fiction city?” “

#1 – Elizabeth Hand – Reykavik, Iceland

#2 – Nalo Hopkinson – Kingston, Jamaica

#3 – Ursula K. LeGuin – Venice, Italy

#4 – China Miéville – London, England

#5 – Michael Moorcock – Marrakesh, Morocco

Quite frankly, I’m surprised that not one person said Tokyo. Hmm…too cliche? Click here to see in detail what each author had to say about each city.
